You should simply run it from a shell, I'm afraid. fvwm and other
managers have fancier ways of doing it, but essentially all they do is
execute the program.
Do any of your other X programs work? If not, then perhaps you've got
DISPLAY set incorrectly, or something similarly silly. Otherwise it
looks as though there's something wrong with your icon installation.
